Wood is a wood working web application that helps determine the number and placement (3. Cuts Tab) of the pieces (2. Specs Tab) needed for a wood working project. It can do either 1 (linear) or 2 dimensional placement giving the fewest number of boards (1. Stock Tab) needed for a project with the minimum amount of scrap within a preset reserve percentage (Settings Tab). One also has the option of fixing the grain orientation during placement.

The 1. Stock tab is used to set the stock or board that will be used / purchased.

Manually enter the nominal values for the stock, i.e. height=2 in, width=4 in and length=8 ft for a standard 2x4.

Or, select one of the predefined stock buttons at the bottom.

The 2. Specs tab is used to specify the pieces or specifications that will be cut from the stock.

The File menu is used to load, save, save as a URL and print the current configuration.

The Edit menu is used to add, remove, delete selected and delete all specifications.

The Calculate menu is used to calculate the cuts for the specifications on the stock.

The section immediately below the menus is used to add and delete the specified number of pieces/cuts for the specified width and length. The piece can be flagged to not be rotated by checking the checkbox.

At the bottom is the list of specifications to be cut from the stock.

The 3. Cuts tab lists the number of stock boards needed along with how the stock should be cut for the specifications.

Each unique stock cutting configuration is listed with the specifications for that cutting configuration detailed above the layout of the cuts.

Each unique stock cutting configuration is numbered with duplicates given a range.

The Settings tab allows you to specify the following settings:

Units  Either inches or millimeters

Kerf  The cut thickness of the blade.

Reserve  The percentage amount to reserve as unused when placing specifications onto the stock for cutting. So, you can have say 20% of each stock left over in case of mistakes.

Shortcuts  Whether or not to underline the shortcut key.

The fully specified URL for the current configuration of Wood is also listed.

At the bottom is information about when this page was last modified and the browser being used along with a link to submit an email.
